A message from Northwest ISD regarding traffic around our campus:

A new school year is upon us, which always means heavy traffic at all Northwest ISD campuses for the first few weeks of the school year. Unfortunately, we expect even heavier traffic in the Eaton High School, Adams Middle School and Schluter Elementary School area because of the opening of a new secondary campus and the limited road options available.

With the opening of Adams Middle School, traffic will likely be congested along Blue Mound Road, Willow Spring Road and Eagle Boulevard during school arrival and dismissal times for the foreseeable future. The one change we’ve been told by TxDOT to expect at the start of the school year is the new traffic signal at Blue Mound Road and U.S. 287. This is expected to speed up the interchange over the current four-way stop.

Beyond this change, we do not expect any significant remedies to alleviate traffic in the area, so we encourage families to plan ahead for likely delays. Additionally, we encourage Schluter families to take routes away from Eagle Boulevard (and, if possible, the portion of Willow Springs Road next to Eaton) by turning on Mesa Crest Drive instead.

We take the traffic situation in this area very seriously and are working with the city of Fort Worth, Tarrant County, and TxDOT for improvements. While the school district has no control over roadways off our property, we always try to coordinate with local and state agencies to improve their conditions. As such, the follow projects are being planned for the area by either the city or state:

  • Widening Blue Mound from the interchange to Willow Springs to four lanes and a median. A roundabout will also be constructed at Blue Mound and Willow Springs. Construction is expected to start at the end of 2018 or beginning of 2019 and will take a year and a half. One lane each direction will remain open at all times during construction.
  • Roundabouts will eventually be constructed at the Blue Mound and 287 interchange; funding was obtained in a 2018 Fort Worth bond package. Construction is expected to begin in two to three years.
  • Northwest ISD is working with City of Fort Worth, Tarrant County, and TxDOT to potentially extend the frontage road and relocate the southbound ramp to U.S. 287 further south of Eagle Boulevard. This would create an opportunity for motorists to turn right off of Eagle Blvd, at U.S. 287, and have direct access to the onramp for U.S. 287, eliminating the current risks motorists face when making an illegal u-turn to access U.S. 287 today. These talks are preliminary, and no timetable exists for any possible change.

We’re ready for a great start to the school year, and we know traffic annoyances aren’t fun for anyone. But we need your help in making this environment as safe as possible. Please exercise caution when driving, as many of our students will be sharing the roads with you or walking to school.
